Description
DESCRIPTIONThis is an original, very limited three-page American bio/press release for The Who.
It’s dated March 1966 and was promoting the band’s forthcoming April single Substitute, which in America came out on the ATCO label. This was the band's sole release on ATCO.
Substitute was the follow-up single to My Generation, which had reached the U.S. Top 100 the previous November. Decca Records released the band's singles in the U.S. before and after Substitute but for a brief time The Who was having issues with the label, specifically Decca producer Shel Talmy.
Amid legal proceedings with Talmy, the band
decided to instead put out Substitute on Robert Stigwood's Reaction Records,
via Polydor, which had a U.S. licensing deal with ATCO. The B-Side, reportedly a jab at Talmy, was titled "Waltz for a Pig" (and oddly was recorded not by The Who but by The Graham Bond Organization!).
As the band's association with ATCO was so brief, any promotional materials with the ATCO logo are incredibly
scarce
. And while promotional photos were often saved, paper materials were generally thrown out. There are few, if any copies of this press release left.
This is a rare piece of Who history and a great addition to any Who memorabilia collection.
