* * * * *EARLY Jerry Lewis MDA POSTER!
This is a RARE artifact from a bygone era:
An EARLY Jerry Lewis poster showing him in his signature TV role - Muscular Dystrophy Telethon Host from the 1960's!
Short of being a senior citizen, you'll likely remember Jerry Lewis best from his appearances as host of the Labor Day TV telethons. Those Jerry Lewis telethons were memorable yearly cultural events back in the days when communal experiences were commonly shared via TV. If you're old enough, you'll remember, most of those telethons aired back when there were only three major networks. That's when "The Wizard of Oz" broadcasts still had widespread meaning. Some may say, "those were the good old days!" Nowadays, there are few repeated yearly broadcasts that draw enough mass interest to warrant the title of "Event." Baseball's World Series telecasts are even waning in viewership due to the fragmented audiences that are participating in today's "on demand" world.
Before all of the modern fragmentation of popular media and society, Jerry Lewis had enjoyed a special place in the landscape of the American entertainment business. Heck, he enjoyed a special place globally, as witnessed by his renowned popularity in France. His early success and rise to superstardom in the 1950s, with his unlikely partnership to crooner and "straight man" Dean Martin, was nothing short of miraculous. Together, the comedy team achieved the #1 status at the box office, not to mention the unparalleled success they shared on stage and TV. The duo's popularity and work product personified much of the optimism and innocence of the 1950s. The comedy team ran strong for exactly ten years, famously, to the day, until 1956, when irreconcilable differences emerged at the heart of their professional aspirations. After their well publicized split, Lewis went on to a highly successful, but surprisingly short lived, solo film career. With the exception of a few films, his solo stint spanned only about a decade, lasting thru the late 1960s. Lewis' feature film efforts were highlighted by a respected foray into directing some of his own productions, the most notable of which came in 1963 with "The Nutty Professor."
In 1966, still young and arguably at (or near) the height of his solo work, Jerry Lewis turned his visibility and energies towards raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association with
The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon
. His work for that organization, punctuated by the yearly telethons, would become the signature achievement in his professional life for the remainder of his show business career. Lewis' relationship with the Muscular Dystrophy Association ended in 2010 with a bitter public split akin to his partnership departure with Dean Martin nearly fifty years earlier. Interestingly, "Martin and Lewis" made one last public outing on the telethon back in 1976 with a surprise live reunion orchestrated by mutual friend and megastar, Frank Sinatra. That event, or moment, served as the highlight to the 44 year stretch Lewis spent as host. It's been estimated that Jerry Lewis has raised nearly .5 Billion dollars for the organization during his stay. Besides the money he'd raised, the undeniable and relentless personal effort put forth by the comedian on behalf of the charity has certainly earned him the title of "Humanitarian" in the epitaphs to come. Jerry Lewis passed away at 91 years old on August 20th, 2017.
This early artifact, documenting the beginnings of that charity work, captures a complex man with a mysterious drive connected to the MDA organization that will perhaps be explained after his death. This more than interesting poster also captures a simpler place and time in this country's history. It's an important and rare piece suitable to hang in any serious collection or archive relating to the comedian or American life in retrospect.
